One of the country’s comedians Felistus Ngwira, popularly known as Nyauyu, has called for partnerships for a girls’ motivational secondary schools tour.
Dubbed Vilekeke Secondary School
Tour, the initiative is aimed at inspiring adolescent girls to work hard in
school through the power of art.
Meanwhile, Nyauyu has teamed up with fellow youthful
artists, gospel musician Miracle Chinga and Mada and Linda Comedy to organise a
girls’ motivational event at Providence Girls Secondary School in Mulanje on
May 7.
She said: “The Vilekeke Secondary
School Tour is more than an entertainment feast. We want to use our art to
inspire adolescent girls in their academic, social and emotional development.
“Therefore, we are calling for
support and partnerships with the corporate world. We believe together we can
make the tour a success.”
Nyauyu said adolescent girls are
facing a lot of difficult situations due to social and economic challenges
currently affecting the country.
“For instance, there are issues
of Covid-19 and mental health which are affecting a lot of people, including
adolescent girls. So, apart from entertaining them, we want to empower them
with a positive mindset so that they focus on their goals,” she said.
On her part, Madalitso Kumbuyo of
Mada and Linda Comedy said the country’s young artists have a role to play in
shaping the future of children.
As part of its corporate social
responsibility, the comedy duo embarked on an initiative called “Reason With
Her” which discusses menstrual hygiene with adolescent girls.
“Somebody once said that a
sanitary pad must be shared for free and as Mada and Linda Comedy, we subscribe
to this idea. No girl can skip menstruation, but not every girl can afford a
sanitary pad. “Therefore, partners can support us with sanitary materials to
distribute during our Providence Secondary School tour,” she said.
